The examples of Kan Tang in Lanna musical rites
Cr. Matichonweekly
Bussakorn Binson explores the profound connection between traditional Lanna musical rites and the symbolic use of food in the Wai Kru ceremony (พิธีไหว้ครู). This ritual, dedicated to honoring both living and deceased music teachers, utilizes various edible offerings, collectively known as Kan Tang (ขันตั้ง), to bridge the gap between human needs and spiritual beliefs. From coconuts symbolizing purity and fertility to the use of alcohol to please the spirits of teachers, Binson illustrates how food acts as a “system of action” that ensures a successful performance and maintains the sacred relationship between student and master.
The Thailand Foundation invites you to discover the spiritual and cultural dimensions of Lanna heritage through the lens of its musical traditions. This research reveals that Thai Buddhist culture views sacred rites not merely as static traditions, but as active expressions of gratitude and respect that continue to nourish the collective identity of the community.
