Sukanya Sujachaya’s interdisciplinary work explores the role of the augury chicken in Tai myths as a symbol of authority and sacred knowledge. Through stories from Tai, Ahom, and Shan communities, the paper reveals how chicken bones, especially the head and thighs, symbolized royal legitimacy, cosmic insight, and possibly the origins of early Tai writing. It offers a unique look at how myth and ritual encode social and political meaning.
The Thailand Foundation invites you to delve into this study to better understand how ancient Tai beliefs reflect enduring Thai values. The augury chicken embodies reverence for nature, wisdom, and harmony illustrating how spiritual and political knowledge were once deeply intertwined—and how such beliefs continue to inform Thai cultural identity today.
