applied for self-improvement and promoting well-being in a wider society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Introduction\"><\/span><strong>Introduction<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The End of Buddhist Lent in 2024 falls on the full moon day of the 11th lunar month, which will be Thursday, October 17, 2024. This marks the end of the three-month Buddhist Lent<a href=\"#_ftn1\" id=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> period during which Buddhist monks remain in their monasteries. This article will discuss the meaning and importance of the End of Buddhist Lent in Thailand and some other Buddhist countries, activities Buddhists observe on this day, and how to apply the practice (called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pavarana\"><em>Pavarana<\/em><\/a> in Pali<a href=\"#_ftn2\" id=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>) for self-improvement, community harmony and promoting well-being in a wider society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Meaning_of_Pavarana\"><\/span><strong>The Meaning of <em>Pavarana<\/em><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The End of Buddhist Lent refers to the last day of the monks&#8217; retreat. On this day, monks perform a monastic ceremony called &#8220;<em>Pavarana<\/em>,&#8221; hence it&#8217;s also called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/spiritualculture.org\/pavarana-day\/\"><em>Pavarana <\/em>Day\u201d (or Invitation Day.<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>Pavarana<\/em>&#8221; is a Pali word meaning &#8220;inviting feedback\u201d or \u201callowing oneself to be admonished&#8221; or &#8220;opening oneself to admonishment.&#8221; It&#8217;s the name of the <em>sangha<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn3\" id=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> ceremony performed on the last day of the Buddhist Lent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Historical_Context\"><\/span><strong>Historical Context<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Buddhist tradition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdomlib.org\/definition\/pavarana-sutta\">here<\/a>, the Buddha was once staying at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdomlib.org\/definition\/migaramatupasada\"><em>Migaramatupasada<\/em><\/a><a href=\"#_ftn4\" id=\"_ftnref4\"><em><strong>[4]<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, and on the day of the <em>pavarana<\/em>, he summoned the five hundred arahants<a href=\"#_ftn5\" id=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a> who were with him and asked if they had any fault to find with him. <a href=\"https:\/\/buddhism-guide.com\/sariputta\/#:~:text=Sariputta%20%C5%9A%C4%81riputra%20%28P%C4%81li%3A%20S%C4%81riputta%3B%20Chinese%3A%20%E8%88%8D%E5%88%A9%E5%BC%97%20Sheli%20Fu%29,of%20the%20most%20important%20disciples%20of%20the%20Buddha.\"><em>Sariputta<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> the Buddha&#8217;s chief disciple, spoke on behalf of the monks, praising the Buddha. In return, the Buddha spoke of <em>Sariputta<\/em>&#8216;s greatness and the blamelessness of the arahants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmc.tv\/article\/8696\">purpose<\/a> of the <em>Pavarana<\/em> practice is multifaceted, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To ultimately alleviate and dissolve any suspicions or misunderstandings that may have arisen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To serve as a means of reconciliation, offering an opportunity for healing relationships strained by conflicts within the community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To foster unity and harmony among members, encouraging close-knit relationships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To promote equality in expressing thoughts, opinions, and constructive criticism, without being hindered by seniority (length of time ordained as a monk) or age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To cultivate brotherhood, characterized by feelings of friendship, goodwill, and mutual care.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Pavarana_Practice\"><\/span><strong>The <em>Pavarana<\/em> Practice<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, the <em>Pavarana<\/em> method involves all monks who stayed for the retreat gathering in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uposatha\"><em>ubosatha<\/em> (ordination hall<\/a>). They recite the <em>Pavarana<\/em> verse together and then individually. The essence of the <em>Pavarana<\/em> verse is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>I invite admonishment from the Sangha, based on what has been seen, heard, or suspected. May the venerable ones admonish me out of compassion. Seeing my fault, I shall make amends<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a monk spent the retreat alone, he should be mindful that this is <em>Pavarana<\/em> Day and resolve to strictly follow the Dhamma-Vinaya, the teachings of the Buddha. If he realizes he\u2019s broken any monastic rules, he should correct himself and not repeat the mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Buddha praised and admired those who make mistakes and then correct them, saying &#8220;<em>Mistakes corrected make one shine like the moon beaming out of a bank of clouds<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Modern_Observances_The_End_of_Buddhist_Lent_Festival\"><\/span><strong>Modern Observances: The End of Buddhist Lent Festival<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Theravada Buddhists in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos place great importance on the End of Buddhist Lent. It is believed that offering <em>Kathina<\/em> robes to the Sangha is a great meritorious act that can lead to blessings and spiritual growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Applying_Pavarana_in_Daily_Life\"><\/span><strong>Applying <em>Pavarana<\/em> in Daily Life<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The principle of <em>Pavarana<\/em> can be applied by everyone, not just monks, for self-improvement, community harmony and the benefit of those around them. Here are some ways to incorporate this practice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Family <em>Pavarana<\/em>: On the last day of Buddhist Lent, lay Buddhists can invite family members to kindly point out any incorrect actions they&#8217;ve observed or suspected. This creates an opportunity for open communication and personal growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regular Check-ins: Extend this practice beyond the annual observance. For example, at the end of each month, week, or even day, couples, parents and children, or friends could engage in a &#8220;<em>pavarana<\/em>&#8221; with each other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Community Practice: Expand the &#8220;principle of <em>pavarana<\/em>&#8221; to a broader scale &#8211; in villages, districts, or provinces. This could foster a culture of constructive feedback and continuous improvement in society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workplace Implementation: Organizations could adopt a version of this practice, encouraging employees to give and receive constructive feedback in a spirit of mutual growth and improvement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmc.tv\/article\/8696\">benefits<\/a> of the <em>Pavarana<\/em> practice are numerous, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It helps to eliminate and dispel all suspicions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Individuals become aware of their own shortcomings and are motivated to improve themselves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People have the opportunity to seek forgiveness from one another, let go of grievances, and cultivate love and goodwill.
