font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>What is happiness?<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/happiness\">Oxford Learner\u2019s Dictionaries<\/a> defines happiness in two meanings, namely the state of feeling or showing pleasure, and the state of being satisfied that something is good or right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >Another word \u2018happy\u2019 is defined in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/happy\">Merriam-Webster Dictionary<\/a> as, \u201c(1) feeling pleasure and enjoyment because of your life, situation, etc., (2) showing or causing feelings of pleasure and enjoyment, and (3) pleased or glad about a particular situation, event, etc.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-happiness-4869755\">Kendra Cherry describes the meaning of happiness in the article \u201cWhat Is Happiness?\u201d<\/a> \u201cHappiness is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment. While happiness has many different definitions, it is often described as involving positive emotions and life satisfaction.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2397&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3GNE3ht\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/3GNE3ht<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span >This refers to what one thinks about his or her life satisfaction, and refers to emotions, moods and feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >It is also clear from the definitions above that the most important word related to happy or happiness is \u201c<strong>feeling \u2013 something that we feel through the senses or the mind<\/strong>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >P.A. Payutto is of the opinion that, \u201cBuddhism is a religion of happiness (Pali: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sukha\"><em>Sukkha<\/em><\/a>)\u201d. He quoted the scriptures and said on page 957 of <a href=\"https:\/\/thailandfoundation.or.th\/buddhism_meditatio\/buddhadhamma-the-law-of-natures-and-their-benefits-to-life\/\">Buddhadhamma: The Law of Natures and Their Benefits to Life<\/a>, that there are many kinds of happiness, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >The happiness of householders; happiness of laypeople &amp; happiness of renunciants; happiness of the renunciant life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >Happiness of sensuality &amp; happiness of renunciation; happiness resulting from a freedom from sensuality and an absence of greed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >Material happiness; happiness dependent on enticements and on consumable objects; carnal pleasure &amp; non-material happiness; happiness independent of things to consume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >Physical pleasure &amp; mental pleasure and so on. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2400&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bhikkhu<\/em> P.A. Payutto is franked by <em>bhikkhu Jayasara<\/em> on his right, and <em>bhikkhu Siripanno<\/em> on his left<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/yhoo.it\/3EAzZiu\">https:\/\/yhoo.it\/3EAzZiu<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<span >Even the highest goal of Buddhism \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nirvana_(Buddhism)\"><em>Nibbana<\/em><\/a> \u2013 is described as a form of happiness, the supreme form of happiness (<em>parama-sukha<\/em>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >The Buddha taught that happiness needs to be cultivated \u2013 from lower levels of happiness to higher ones. Buddhism is a system of developing happiness, and development of happiness is given great emphasis in Buddhism. One can define the entirety of Buddhist practice as this cultivation of happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >In addition to the article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3GRzXVh\">What Is Happiness?<\/a>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-happiness-4869755#citation-11\">by Kendra Cherry<\/a> already mentioned, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mGc62L\">What Is Happiness?<\/a>\u201d on <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mGc62L\">Psychology Today<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3q2hjUT\">Psychology of Happiness<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3q2hjUT\">Psychologist World<\/a> may also be found useful to read together with this my article. I\u2019ve found that the Buddha\u2019s sayings on happiness go very well with the modern-day findings on psychology of happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >I would like to note that in this article, I\u2019ll talk about the happiness dependent on material things or happiness of the ordinary people, that is, sense pleasure, or in other words, happiness through \u201c<strong>feeling happy<\/strong>\u201d. I won\u2019t touch on non-material happiness, which in Buddhism refers to the happiness of the first three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learnreligions.com\/the-jhanas-or-dhyanas-449552\"><em>Jhanas<\/em>,<\/a> which is superior than material happiness. Neither do I write about happiness exceeding and transcending non-material happiness, which refers to the happiness and joy experienced by one whose mind is free from mental taints, who reflects on the mind liberated from greed, hatred and delusion. In Buddhism, this last happiness is the supreme or greatest one.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_Can_We_Find_Happiness_or_How_Can_We_be_happy\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Where Can We Find Happiness or How Can We be happy?<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2398&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3bphcdx\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/3bphcdx<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span >The Buddha pointed out that \u201c<em>There is no path to happiness: happiness is the path<\/em>.\u201d On this, P.A. Payutto cited the scriptures and said in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/thailandfoundation.or.th\/buddhism_meditatio\/buddhadhamma-the-law-of-natures-and-their-benefits-to-life\/\">Buddhadhamma: The Law of Natures and Their Benefits to Life<\/a>, on chapter 11 which is entirely on Happiness that the Buddha discovered that generally \u2018<em>happiness can be reached by way of happiness<\/em>\u2019, which was contrary to the belief at the time of the Buddha that \u201chappiness cannot\u00a0be reached by way of happiness; it can only be reached by way of pain.\u201d P.A. Payutto also mentioned that even the highest goal of Buddhism, of awakening (<a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopediaofbuddhism.org\/wiki\/Bodhi\"><em>bodhi<\/em><\/a>) or supreme happiness, is to be reached by way of happiness or through a practice consisted of happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >All people who are aware of this principle of supreme happiness have the opportunity to develop ourselves in order to realize it. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >As we know, <strong>happiness<\/strong> is an <strong>emotion<\/strong>al state characterized by <strong>feeling<\/strong>s of <strong>joy<\/strong>, <strong>pleasure<\/strong>, <strong>satisfaction<\/strong>, <strong>contentment<\/strong>, and <strong>fulfillment<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >The happiness originates in the mind or brain. However, external events can definitely influence or stimulate our emotions. Therefore, we need to train our mind or the brain \u2013 in such a way that it is the originator of happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >On this, the Buddha said a lot about the importance of the mind training in <a href=\"C:\/\/Users\/paito\/Downloads\/Bomhard_translator_The_Dhammapada_The_Pa.pdf\">Dhammapada<\/a> rendered into English by Allan R. Bomhard, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span >(But first \u2013 pause -, remember this frank word of the Buddha,)<em> \u201c<strong>All the effort must be made by you; the Tathagatas (Buddha) can only show the way<\/strong>\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >Then consider the Buddha\u2019s advice on happiness:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span ><em>\u201cAll mental phenomena have mind as their forerunner; they have mind as their chief; <\/em><\/span><span ><em>they are mind-made. If one speaks or acts with pure intentions, <strong>happiness<\/strong> will follow, like a shadow that never leaves one\u2019s side. <\/em>(On the contrary, \u2026. <em>If one speaks or acts with evil intentions, <strong>suffering<\/strong> will follow, just as the wheels of a cart follow the oxen that pull it along.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >\u201c<em>A disciplined mind brings <strong>happiness<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d (Later in the article, the author will talk about the mind training \u2013 through <a href=\"https:\/\/thailandfoundation.or.th\/buddhism_meditatio\/meditation-in-thailand\/\">Meditation<\/a>, which plays a significant role in training \u2013 and even taming &#8211; the mind.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >\u201c<em>A lazy man will never find <strong>happiness<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >\u201c<em>A wise man, even when confronted with misery, never give up the hope to find <strong>happiness<\/strong>.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >\u201c<em>A person wishing for <strong>happiness<\/strong> should allay bereavement, pining, and distress; \u2026 he is free and discovers peace of mind. He passes beyond all grief, sorrowless and quenched<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span ><em>\u201cGuard yourself against bodily misconduct; control your body. Give up evil deeds, <\/em><\/span><span ><em>and cultivate good deeds. Guard yourself against evil speech; control your tongue. Give up evil speech, and cultivate good speech. Guard yourself against evil thoughts; control your mind. Give up evil thoughts, and cultivate good thoughts.<\/em> <em>Those who are wise are disciplined in body, as well as in speech and in mind. They are well controlled indeed.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >Do not be happy or sad by mere praise or blame because <em>\u201cthere is an old saying, it is not just of today: \u201cPeople will blame you if you say too much; they will blame you if you say too little; they will blame you if you say just enough. No one escapes blame in this world. There never was, there never will be, nor is there now anyone who receives all praise or all blame.\u201d<\/em><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span ><em>\u201cSome give out of faith, others out of devotion. Do not envy others for the gifts they receive, or you will have no <strong>peace of mind<\/strong> by day or night. Those who have destroyed the roots of envy have peace of mind by day and night.\u201d<\/em><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2403&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Yc0ECO\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/2Yc0ECO<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span ><em>\u201cThose who seek their own <strong>happiness<\/strong> by inflicting pain on others, being themselves entangled by the bonds of hatred, cannot be free from hatred.\u201d<\/em><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2405&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mpZ8pP\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/3mpZ8pP<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span ><em>\u201cConquer those who are angry through loving-kindness, those who are evil through <\/em><\/span><span ><em>goodness, those who are greedy through generosity, and those who tell lies through <\/em><\/span><span ><em>truthfulness.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span ><em>\u201c<\/em><em>As your family, friends, and well-wishers receive you with joy when you return home from a long journey, so will your good deeds receive you when you go from this life to the next, where they will be waiting for you with joy, like your kinsmen.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >Scientifically, Dr. Jill Seladi-Schulman said in the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/what-part-of-the-brain-controls-emotions#the-limbic-system\">What Part of the Brain Controls Emotions?<\/a>\u201d that scientists have agreed that these three parts of the brain in the limbic system play a crucial role in controlling and processing emotion. Hypothalamus controls emotional responses, sexual responses, hormone release, and regulating body temperature. Amygdala helps coordinate responses to things in your environment, especially those that trigger an emotional response. This structure plays an important role in fear and anger. And limbic cortex impact mood, motivation, and judgement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2404&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/binged.it\/3bypaRt\">https:\/\/binged.it\/3bypaRt<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span >In sum, to be happy ourselves, we need to take care of our mind or brain, which is the forerunner of all thoughts &#8211; the states of mind. We have to endeavor to preclude the arising of evil demeritorious (including negative, destructive, etc.) states that have not yet arisen; we endeavor to reject the evil\u2026demeritorious states that have already arisen; we endeavor to cause the arising of meritorious (including positive, constructive, etc.) states that have not yet arisen; we endeavor to increase and to consciously reproduce the meritorious\u2026states that have already arisen; and to develop them fully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Can_We_Help_Others_Around_Us_be_Happy_Too\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><span >How Can We Help Others Around Us be Happy Too<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span ><span >\u00a0In order for us \u2013 as an individual &#8211; to help other people \u2013 as far as the society as a whole &#8211; to be happy as well, P.A. Payutto quoted the Buddha as teaching that we first <span >develop desire as a wish to act (Pali: <em>kattukamyata-chanda <\/em>or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chanda_%28Buddhism%29\"><em>kusala chanda<\/em><\/a><em> \u2013 wholesome desire<\/em>). K<em>attukamyata-chanda<\/em> is the desire to act, the wish to engage, the wish to create, the desire to improve, the desire to train, the desire to study, the desire to practice \u2013 good and useful things for ourselves and others.<\/span><\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2399&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZCJv61\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/2ZCJv61<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span >The Buddha also advised on how to deal with desire \u2013 and even how to develop a good desire and suppress the bad one \u2013 that, first, we have to empower wholesome mental qualities such as a desire to act in order for something to reach a state of virtue or completion, and second, we replace negative mental qualities with positive ones. For example, Paul covets John\u2019s money and wants to steal it, but he considers how difficult it was for John to acquire this money. John has enough problem; why create more for him? A person with concentration knows how to calm the mind and to both control and ease any mental suffering.\u00a0 One is able to keep one\u2019s emotions in check and one has a strong mental immune system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span >Modern-day scientific researches have found a lot of benefits of meditation. For example, Dr. Elena Antonova, senior lecturer in psychology at Brunel University London, said in \u00a0the CNN clip titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z4a_hbW_LjQ\">What&#8217;s the science behind meditation?<\/a>\u201d that meditation is like a mental hygiene.
