Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and\/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-2148 size-full\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"651\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/thailandfoundation.or.th\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/depresssion.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thailandfoundation.or.th\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/depresssion.jpg 651w, https:\/\/thailandfoundation.or.th\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/depresssion-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 651px) 100vw, 651px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Photo credit: https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FO1qqk)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u2018FEELING\u2019 is a very important word here. So are the words \u201cthink\u201d, \u201cact\u201d and \u201chope\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I cannot find a word in Buddhism that equates with the word \u201cdepression\u201d, I think this word may be equivalent to these Pali words: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdomlib.org\/definition\/shoka\"><em>Soka<\/em><\/a> (grief), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdomlib.org\/definition\/parideva\"><em>parideva<\/em><\/a> (lamentation) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisdomlib.org\/definition\/domanassa\"><em>Domanassa<\/em><\/a> (distress, anguish, unpleasant feeling in the mind, sad-mindedness, displeasure, melancholy or grief). They are a kind of mental pain, which is a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/accesstoinsight.org\/ptf\/dhamma\/sacca\/sacca1\/dukkha.html\"><em>Dhukkha<\/em><\/a> translated as &#8220;suffering&#8221;, &#8220;anxiety&#8221;, &#8220;stress&#8221; or &#8220;unsatisfactoriness&#8221; in Buddhism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Causes_Depression\"><\/span><strong><br>What Causes Depression?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/depression\/recover\">American Psychological Association<\/a> states that there is no single answer to this question. Some depression is caused by changes in the body&#8217;s chemistry that influence mood and thought processes. Biological factors can also cause depression. In other cases, depression is a sign that certain mental and emotional aspects of a person&#8217;s life are out of balance. For example, significant life transitions and life stresses, such as the death of a loved one, can bring about a depressive episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Buddhas_Advice_on_Depression\"><\/span><strong>The Buddha\u2019s Advice on Depression<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Buddha attached great importance to how to handle one\u2019s own feeling in preventing and managing depression. He advised that we train our mind in such a way that it is always on the right track, not the wrong one. In comparing a trained mind to an expert driver of a car, I can say that the trained mind will almost always \u201cdecide to act\u201d rightly on various occasions, like the clever driver who usually \u201cdecides and acts rightly\u201d in handling his car in the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Buddha had a lot of advice to prevent this kind of trouble from happening in our mind. He even had advice on how to handle it if it has already \u201cbeen&#8221; in our mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Buddha\u2019s advice may be regarded as a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhelp.com\/advice\/depression\/the-history-of-depression-how-depression-and-treatments-have-changed-over-time\/?utm_source=AdWords&amp;utm_medium=Search_PPC_m&amp;utm_term=_b&amp;utm_content=118051369567&amp;network=g&amp;placement=&amp;target=&amp;matchtype=b&amp;utm_campaign=11771068538&amp;ad_type=text&amp;adposition=&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwqp-LBhDQARIsAO0a6aKlkOMKuTYqF9vHBLC1kVxwobRN2Mb_BrjqjGu8FEaHK4zrz8JL8loaAkFWEALw_wcB\">Cognitive Behavioral Therapy<\/a> that targets helping patients learning to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. For example, he said as quoted in <a href=\"https:\/\/thailandfoundation.or.th\/buddhism_meditatio\/buddhadhamma-the-law-of-natures-and-their-benefits-to-life\/\">Buddhadhamma: The Law of Natures and Their Benefits to Life<\/a> the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Taming the mind to be effective is good. A tamed mind brings happiness<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He advised that we try to live a life of a wiseman who understands and accepts the state of alternating periods of good times and bad times in life saying, \u201c<em>The full moon rises and then wanes; the sun illumines the earth and sets. I see through the worldly vicissitudes; therefore, I do not grieve whilst others are grieving.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another advice in point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Pleasure and pain, fame and disrepute,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Gain and loss, praise and blame:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>For human beings these things are transient,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Inconstant and bound to change.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>One mindful and wise discerns them well,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Observant of their alterations.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Pleasant things do not stir his mind,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>And those unpleasant do not annoy<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">For those of us whose minds have already been troubled with depression, the Buddha advised that we have to try to live in the present moment: \u201c<em>Hanker not after the past, nor fantasize over the future, for the past has been left behind and the future has not been reached<\/em>.\u201d Try it &#8211; stop thinking about or being angry about the past or something that happened in the past, and stop untimely worry for the future. This will help us to stay calm and cheerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The great Buddhist sage <a href=\"https:\/\/viewonbuddhism.org\/depression.html\">Nagarjuna also advised on how to view problems or obstacles<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>If there is a remedy when trouble strikes,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>What reason is there for despondency?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>And if there is no help for it,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>What is the use of being sad?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>So come what may, I&#8217;ll never harm<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>My cheery happiness of mind.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Depression never brings me what I want;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>My virtue will be warped and marred by it<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Buddhas_Advice_and_Meditation_Can_Work_Well_to_Help_with_Depression\"><\/span><strong> The Buddha\u2019s Advice and Meditation Can Work Well to Help with Depression<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the Buddha\u2019s advice on preventing and handling depression, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meditation\">meditation<\/a> \u2014 meaning the act of giving one\u2019s attention to only one thing, either as a religious activity or as a way of becoming calm and relaxed \u2014 particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/mindfulness-meditation-88369\">Mindfulness Meditation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/positivepsychology.com\/loving-kindness-meditation\/\">Loving-kindness Meditation<\/a> (Pali: Metta) is found to be of a great help in preventing and treating depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Buddha is quoted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watnyanaves.net\/uploads\/File\/books\/pdf\/667-Buddhadhamma-English.pdf\">Buddhadhamma: The Law of Natures and Their Benefits to Life pp. 1437-1438<\/a> as speaking of the benefits of Mindfulness Meditation: \u201cThis concentration by mindfulness of breathing when developed and cultivated, is peaceful and sublime. It is a body energizer, a refreshing, pleasant abiding. It provides unsurpassed security and wellbeing, \u2026[also] leads to the destruction of taints.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Buddha spoke of 11 benefits derived from practicing Metta in <a href=\"https:\/\/tricycle.org\/trikedaily\/benefits-loving-friendliness-meditation\/\">the Discourse on the Benefits of Loving-Friendliness (Metta Nisamsa Sutta)<\/a>. They include sleeping well, waking up easily, dreaming sweetly, being liked, feeling serene, concentrating easily, having a fair complexion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Buddha also advised his followers to cultivate Metta in this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>May all beings everywhere plagued<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>with sufferings of body and mind<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>quickly be freed from their illnesses.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>May those frightened cease to be afraid,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>and may those bound be free.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>May the powerless find power,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>and may people think of befriending each other.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In modern times, there are studies on the benefits of both mindfulness and loving-kindness meditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/how-meditation-helps-with-depression\">Harvard Medical School has an article on \u2018How meditation helps with depression\u2019<\/a>. Its headline says, \u201cA regular practice can help your brain better manage stress and anxiety that can trigger depression.\u201d The article also tells how it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other studies in 2000, 2008 and 2010 cited by Meagan B. MacKenzie1 and Nancy L. Kocovski in the article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4876939\/\">Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for depression: trends and developments<\/a>\u201d found that there is consistent empirical evidence in support of using mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) to decrease the risk of depressive relapse. MBCT was then a new approach in cognitive therapy for depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/metta-meditation#benefits\">decreasing stress and anxiety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/positivepsychology.com\/loving-kindness-meditation\/\">Metta meditation has many more benefits<\/a> as mentioned by Kirsten Nunez, such as less self-criticism, more positive emotions, less self-destructive thoughts, reduced pain symptoms, more resilience, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/meditation-for-depression\">Crystal Raypole on Healthline<\/a> advises on how long to meditate daily in her article<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Meditation Won\u2019t Cure Your Depression, but It Can Be a Big Help\u2019. It\u2019s okay to start small. Even 5 minutes a day can help.
