Traditional Crafts Series: Traditional Basketry – Kong Khao Dok

In Northern Thailand, glutinous rice (also known as sticky rice) is consumed as a staple food. Bamboo baskets built to contain cooked rice is an essential item of every households. As time passed, the baskets are transformed from mere functional tools to expressive works of arts. Each community developed their own patterns, with techniques being passed down from generation to generations. Today, Northern rice baskets (called kong khao dok in Northern Thai dialect) are regarded as sought-after collectibles as well as living testaments of Northern Thai artistic wisdom.
