Thai Arts Masters: Phaya Sor
Thai PBS and Thailand Foundation proudly present “Thai Arts Masters”, where we explore the stories of master craftsmen from all across Thailand.
In this episode, we take a look at a rare type of coconut called the “Phaya Sor” (Fiddle Lord). Thai craftsmen have been using these special nuts to create traditional fiddles called “saw u” for ages. Through the process of carving, the humble coconut shells are transformed into exquisite works of art. The skill required for working this material is indicative of the sprit of Thai craftsmanship, which stems from a deep appreciation and respect for nature.
We visited Master Sompon Ketkaew who has been carving coconut shells since the time of his youth. Follow his story and the special connection he has with his instruments.
