Thai Arts Masters: Wooden Elephants

Thai PBS and Thailand Foundation proudly present “Thai Arts Masters”, where we explore the stories of master craftsmen from all across Thailand.

In this episode, we travel to Nothern Thailand, home to many skilled woodcarvers. Thai wood carving stems from the respect an appreciation of natural elements. Through ages refined skills, Thai carvers are able to turn dead pieces of wood into delicate artworks thriving with life and grace.

Master Phetch Wiriya has made a name for himself as an expert carver. His subject of creative interest is none other than Thailand’s national animal: the elephant. The master’s are more than artistic icons; they are a statement meant to capture the very life and essence of the majestic animal. Have a look at at his, and you might just wonder whether you are looking at wood or an actual elephant!
